Post / Page SEO Tips Using WordPress SEO by Yoast Plugin

There are essentially two very good SEO plugins for WordPress that’s currently available worth shouting about, the most obvious All-in-One SEO and the WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin. Both plugins offer exceptional tools and features to maximize your blog’s search engine optimization efforts, with perhaps the All-in-One SEO plugin being the most popular of the two.

I’ve been using the WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin pretty much since the birth of this blog, and have been pretty pleased with the job it’s done so far, which is why in today’s post I’d like to take a look at some of the top features and tools available within the plugin that you should be taking full advantage of, when publishing your posts and pages in your WordPress blog.

When you create a new post or page in your blog, the SEO panel will give you three tabs for you to make desired changes to; general settings, page analysis and advanced settings. Let’s take a closer look at these tools and how to use them effectively.

SEO Tips WordPress

WordPress SEO General Settings

In the general settings section you will notice a snippet preview of how your post or page will look like in the search engine search results. You can actually make changes to how this appears.

By entering the focus keyword for your article, the report will tell you exactly how many times this focus keyword appears in your copy and meta settings. For example if your focus keyword is absent from your article heading, the report will generate a value of zero in red.

It is important that when you search engine optimize your posts and pages in WordPress, that you make the best possible tweaks to see as many green bold lines as possible. Take a look at the screenshot below.

WordPress SEO Page Analysis

This feature is a Yoast and Linkdex collaboration, and is a priceless feature in every sense. Each time you update or make changes to your post / page SEO settings the page analysis report is also updated.

There are many essential and sometimes overlooked points that the page analysis will make you aware of, including the flesch reading ease score, which is a score of 1 to 100 of how easy or difficult your copy is to read.

It is essential that you keep refreshing the analysis report to ensure that you’ve optimized for the best possible SEO score for your posts and pages in WordPress. Take a look at the screenshot below showing the page analysis points created for one of my recent posts.

WordPress SEO Advanced Settings

This tab allows you to make changes to how your post will appear to the search engines; so you can make your posts and pages follow or ‘’ as well as index or ‘’. You can also make changes to the advances meta settings.

The other options include adding your page to your site’s XML sitemap; the canonical URL your page should point to if different or use 301 redirects.

I hope that focusing on these SEO post / page tools in WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin will help you get more out of using the plugin and gear you towards utilizing better SEO practices for our blog.

    Hi, Kevin Stacey here..

First off, this post is extremely thorough! I don’t see too many bloggers going into detail like you have…that’s the mark of a blogger who knows their SEO plugin. For optimization, free plugins like All in One SEO Pack are really great as it lays down the basic SEO foundation for a WordPress site, but every blog is different and nothing works best for everyone.

I always suggest looking at a side-by-side comparison of the best seo plugins for WordPress in order to make an informed decision of what the best plugin is for that blogger and their website’s specific needs.

Here’s my most recent write-up on the subject:

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Great article btw…I’ll be referencing this post on my main blog.

This is perhaps the most thoughtful, useful article of this type I’ve seen. It goes beyond a lot of the surface-level ideas I’ve seen repeated over and over in other places. Nicely said :)

I am using Platinum SEO on my Blog.. Can i change my plugin without affecting the SEO.

    • Fabrizio Van Marciano

I’m not too sure, what you could do is install the new plugin, activate it and see if the settings are transferable. There is a plugin called seo data transporter available but I think that’s only if your current seo settings are installed in an existing theme framework.
